Antimicrobial Activity of Tannin Extract Ointment Formulated from Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don Leaves on Infected Wounds of Oryctolagus cuniculus Linn.

The study determined the antimicrobial activity of the tannin extract ointment on the infected wounds of the rabbits. Tannin was extracted from the leaves of Periwinkle (Catharantus roseus) using 70% acetone, 5% lead acetate solution, and hydrogen sulfide gas, respectively. Its antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeroginusa, and Candida albicans employing the Kirby – Bauer Test. The tannin extract was subsequently formulated into an ointment. Patch and scratch tests were conducted to the rabbits to rule out any allergic reaction to the ointment when applied topically. The tannin extract ointment was administered topically two times daily to the wounds of the rabbits infected with microorganisms aforementioned. On the fifth day of treatment, complete closure of the wound and disappearance of redness on the affected area was apparent. The findings revealed that the ointment formulation of tannin extract from Periwinkle leaves is effective for skin infection.
