Motivation and its Implication on Academic Performance

Ar-An J. Nanol

Because of the stiff competition brought about by the ASEAN integration and globalization and the importance of academic performance to be competitive in any professional field, quest for seeking the best strategies to improve academic performance have never been more important than today. This study wants to determined the impact of motivation in improving students academic performance. It is anchored on the socio-cognitive theory and self-efficacy theory by Albert Bandura, expectancy-value model by Eccles & Wigfield; goal orientation theory by Ames and self-determination theory by Deci and Ryan. The descriptive-correlational method was used in the study utilizing 554 paramedical students from second to fourth or fifth year chosen through stratified random sampling. The study adopted the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) by Pintrich (1991), to determined the students level of motivation. The study found that self-efficacy is strongly correlated and a predictor of academic performance. Intrinsic motivation on the other hand correlates with academic performance but extrinsic motivation predicts it. Thus, more attention should be given on the strategies mentioned above, especially self-efficacy to improve the academic performance among paramedical students.
