Psychosocial Adjustment Strategies Adapted by Early Retirees

Lyra Indira Q. Ilagan

This study assessed the psychosocial adjustment strategies used by the early retirees of San Miguel Corporation, Misamis Oriental. A survey questionnaire was utilized to measure the respondents’ adaptation of psychosocial strategies. To gather the data, the researcher tracked down the respondents using the addresses provided by the firm’s regional secretary. The researchers personally distributed and retrieved the research instrument. The data were statistically treated using the weighted mean and the t- test of difference. The instrument used was tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha (0.837) which indicates a high level of reliability. The findings show that the early retirees had excellent spiritual, social, and emotional strategies as they adjusted to the changes brought about by retirement. Health strategies were poorly adapted by the retirees as they entered into a new life phase of their lives. Also, there was a significant difference in the retirees’ use of psychosocial adjustment strategies. Spiritual strategies were adapted to the highest extent while health-related strategies were adapted to the lowest extent. Thus, the following recommendations are offered: social networks such as engaging in social civic activities and community projects must be established so that retirees may be assisted in the transition brought about by retirement.
