Level of Masculinity and Femininity Leading Towards the Acceptance of Homosexuality Among Psychology Major Students

Joelyn R. Sobremonte

This study explored the influence of a person’s perceived level of femininity and masculinity on his or her acceptance of homosexuality. Involved in the study were thirty (30) B.S Psychology students at Liceo de Cagayan University. Two kinds of questionnaires were utilized to gather the data that were statistically treated using the weighted mean and Pearson r. The male respondents perceived themselves to be highly masculine and highly feminine. Likewise, the female respondents perceived themselves highly feminine and masculine. Both male and female respondents moderately accepted homosexuality. However, the females were less comfortable with the sexual advances by members of the same sex and the idea that male spouses might become attracted to members of their own sex. The male respondents, on the other hand, held a moderately favorable attitude toward such possible advances by male homosexuals. There was a significant relationship between the respondents’ level of acceptance of homosexuality and their level of femininity and masculinity. A person’s perceived level of masculinity or femininity significantly influences his/her level of acceptance of homosexuality. The person’s favorable attitude towards homosexuality is facilitated by his or her knowledge and understanding of his/her own sexual orientation. Indeed, people who are comfortable with their own persona also are tolerant of others’ persona.
