Mimosa pudica Linn. commonly known as Makahiya belongs to the family Mimosaceae has been used to avoid or cure several disorders such as urinary infections, asthma and vaginal and uterine complaints. It has been studied for its treatment in arising disease from blood impurities and bile, jaundice and leprosy. The present study deals with the formulation and evaluation of antihyperglycemic activity of Mimosa pudica Linn. ethanolic extract. The phytochemical constituents were identified in Mimosa pudica Linn. (Makahiya) such as the alkaloids, flavonoids, and glycosides. These three plant constituents are responsible for the hypoglycemic activity of Mimosa pudica Linn. A positive result was obtained and the three constituents were all present in the Mimosa pudica Linn. extract. A pharmaceutical dosage form was formulated using the Mimosa pudica Linn. extract, using various excipients such as lactose, gelatin, starch, stearic acid, methyl paraben by direct compression. The formulated tablets were also evaluated with different tests such as thickness test, diameter test and weight variation test. The findings of the study may provide bench mark information for further studies of Mimosa pudica Linn. (Makahiya) as an alternative medicine.
