Experiences and Intervention among Retakers in Medical Surgical Nursing

The study aimed (1) to determine the incidence of low performance in Medical-Surgical lecture; (2) to describe the student’s experiences in terms of reactions and perceived factors; (3) to describe the interventions done by the students and the instructor; and (4) to determine the gaps and challenges. The quantitative descriptive method will be used to determine the incidence and qualitative descriptive method for the interventions of low performing students in medical surgical nursing. The research respondents of this study will be 3rd year nursing students of Liceo de Cagayan University. The researchers will use the random sampling method, of which the respondents of the study will be fifteen (15) must fall on the categories and these are the following: (1) should be in N203 level at present, (2) failed only once in Medical-Surgical subject or repeat only once in M-S; and (3) currently enrolled in the same university. The study will utilize a researcher made guide questions from the concept of Achievement Goal Theory. After the approval of this study, a letter will be sent to the Dean of the College of Nursing asking permission to conduct the study. After the approval, the level coordinator and clinical instructors of NCM501-202 will be informed and asked to cooperate with the study. The questionnaires will be distributed to the respondents during the time of their lecture. The frequency and percentage will be used to analyze the data gathered, the weighed mean, simple percentage and multiple regressions. The study determined that majority of the enrollees in NCM 501-202 are re-takers compared to the regular number of students enrolled in the subject and that most of these re-takers have different reactions when they failed but majority cried and were sad but despite of that were able to move on after the event and make sure that they tried their best for the second time. The study determined that most of the students who retook the exam accepted their faith and are willing to try their best in order to succeed in nursing. The study also determined that the perceived factor why they don’t actually study is the lack of time to do it. Mismanagement of time and simply not studying greatly affects performance of students in Medical-Surgical Nursing. Going to school unprepared and having low grades affects almost everything contributing to failures in the College of Nursing. Despite of it, they did interventions which would greatly affect their performance and succeed the subject matter in due time.
