Learning Styles and Experiences in Medical-Surgical Nursing Lecture

The study was conducted at Liceo de Cagayan University, to determine the learning styles among nursing students during the Medical-Surgical Nursing lecture. Specifically it focused on the following: (1) to determine learning styles of the nursing students in Level 3; (2) to describe their experiences on Medical-Surgical in terms of teaching strategies need by lectures by concepts, (3) to determine the readiness of students on conceptual method of teaching in Medical-Surgical lecture as perceived by trends; and (4) to identify the gaps and challenges. The descriptive-qualitative design was used. The purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of respondents. A researcher made questionnaire adopted from Kolb’s Learning Styles was the main instrument in the data collection. Majority of the respondents were assimilators, they learned through thinking and watching. With the technology that instructors utilized nowadays, new trends of learning were also used by the students to cope with the fast moving technology in learning. They preferred that their instructors utilized new forms of instructional media, like the use of power point presentation, film showing, and other new devices that help in teaching. Students felt bored during the lecture because they cannot understand the topic, also the instructors failed to motivate them, due to the teaching styles they used. The extent of the learning of the respondents was enhanced through the strategies utilized by the teachers.
