Realities in the Select Filipino and Korean Films

The study sought to understand the culture and society of the Filipinos and Koreans through the depiction of images present in the movies. The study aimed to determine (1) the images depicted in the Korean and Filipino films, (2) the similarities and differences of these images, (3) and the realities they suggest. Using the descriptive content analysis, the researchers selected and reviewed six (6) films. The Korean films were 200 Pounds Beauty, My Boyfriend is Type B, and Marathon while the Filipino films were Anak, And I Love You So, and Working Girls. The images that were depicted in the films are being family oriented of the Koreans and Filipinos and showing respect for elders, among others. The Korean films depicted similar images with the Filipino films when it comes to family- values and how both share common practices in respecting the elders. Moreover, present on the images is the continually evolving society of these two (2) different cultures such as feminism in the Filipino film Working Girls. Some current social issues were also present like women who undergo plastic surgery or enhancement which was seen in both Korean and Filipino films. The presentation of these images may help individuals to better understand both the Korean and Filipino culture and its society. The images depicted present realities that may help encourage film viewers to have a better understanding of one’s culture and tradition and also for them to develop cultural awareness and understanding.
