Locus of Control and Coping Mechanisms of Teenage Mothers

Rhonna Ruth S. Dagondon

This study assessed the locus of control and coping mechanisms of teenage mothers in Camiguin Province. The researchers used the descriptive design. The weighted mean was used to determine the dominant locus of control and the level of coping mechanisms of the respondents and the Pearson r correlation to validate the relationship between the two variables. The findings show that the teenage mothers’ locus of control was dominantly external. The coping mechanisms of these young mothers were used to an average extent. Also, there was no significant relationship between the teenage mothers’ locus of control and coping mechanisms. Thus, the following recommendations are offered: welfare institutions in the community should provide counseling services to teenage mothers’ so that they may know how to cope effectively with motherhood-related problems; parents should continue to support their daughters’ schooling; and a  study on how teenage motherhood affects employment opportunities and a chance of marriage should be conducted.
