Determinants Affecting Academic Competitiveness Among High School Students

This study aimed to identify the determinants affecting academic competitiveness among the high school students of Liceo de Cagayan University. The questionnaire used was adopted and modified from the study of Shwalb (1995) about the competitive and cooperative attitudes of adolescents. The questionnaire has two parts. The first part was the determinants of academic competitiveness which was measured in terms of peer pressure, parents expectations, preservation of self-image and motivation. The second part was the level of academic competitiveness in terms of gaining of self-confidence, time management, class behavior and academic achievement. Percentage and frequency distribution were employed in describing the determinants affecting academic competitiveness of respondents so as Chi-square test was used in testing the relationships between the determinants. In conclusion, the determinants of academic competitiveness were verbally described as most often competitive. The same holds through with the level of academic competitiveness wherein the indicators were verbally described as most often competitiveness.
