This study aimed to evaluate the canal if it is sufficient to accommodate the storm water during rainy days. This study determined the possible causes of flooding at the area. Cross sections of the canal, maximum rainfall and the rainfall intensity duration curves are the data we used in evaluating the canal. The cross-sections of the canal were obtained from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), 1st District Engineering Office, Cagayan de Oro City. The rainfall data and the rainfall intensity duration curves were obtained at PAGASA, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental. Computation of discharge was made to evaluate if the canal could accommodate the actual storm water discharge. A reconnaissance survey was conducted to collect data and gather information from the area in which the study is situated. An inspection of the main canal revealed various problems and factors which could consider as the possible reasons why Bulua Highway is prone to flooding. Survey questionnaires were used to gather information from the respondents. The computation shows that the canal could sufficiently accommodate the actual storm water discharge. The areas with those rip rapping was not complete became prone to soil erosion. The silt deposited in the canal together with the garbage blocked the passage of water. Siltation resulted to a shallower canal thus flooding easily occurred even during night rains. The survey results proved that people living besides the canal do not dispose their garbage properly; instead threw them into the sewer system. To the Local Government Unit, it is suggested that they must implement seminars or information drive to the people living besides the canal on how to properly dispose their garbage. To the Department of Public Works and Highways – 1st District Engineering Office, it is suggested that they must perform monthly cleaning of the main canal and proper maintenance. A Solid Waste Management Program must be properly implemented which includes the proper disposal of waste from the house, garbage collection must be observed and garbage bin must be present in every corner of the area.
