4. Description Abstract

This study of the University Community Extension Program aimed atempowering river communities and explored the problems besetting the twentytworivercommunities of Cagayan de OroCity,Philippines. Dataweregathered
fromkey informants and residentsthroughfocus groupdiscussion, in-depth interviews, and on-site observation. The Participatory Situational Analysis was used to engage community stakeholders in developing an action plan thatincorporated the community’s resources, concerns, and priorities. Findings of thestudy reveal that the priority problems of the river communities were related toemployment/livelihood, education/literacy, environment, peace and order, andinfrastructure. These findings may serve as basis for the crafting of programsand activities that the local government units, schools, and non-governmentorganizations can work on collaboratively to improve the quality of life of thepeople in river communities.
