Indigenous Peoples Awareness and Local Government’s Performance of Rights and Responsibilities in Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous People’s Rights Act (IPRA) of 1997

The study is about the awareness of the indigenous people’s rights and responsibilities as stated in Chapters 3 and 4 of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997. At the same time, the study determined the performance of the LGU of Talakag in promoting and protecting these indigenous people’s rights and responsibilities. The purpose of the study is to create an intervention to elevate the level of awareness of the indigenous peoples of their rights at the same time aid the local government to enhance their level of performance in the promotion and protection of the rights and responsibilities of the Indigenous Peoples. The research utilized a Quantitative descriptive analysis. Hence, the data showed that the Indigenous Peoples of Barangay Tagbak, Talakag, Bukidnon were highly aware of their rights and responsibilities, but the LGU fall-short in promoting and protecting their rights and responsibilities. Therefore, the LGU must step up their performance in promoting and protecting the rights of the Indigenous Peoples and they must be re-oriented and re-trained with the importance of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997.
