Gross Motor Performance of Preterm and Full Term Infants: A Comparative Study

This study aimed to determine the significant difference between gross motor performance of preterm and full term infants in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental and Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. A total of fourty-eight preterm and full term infants who are 5-6 months are assessed using Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). The study made use of descriptive and observational design to compare the variables important in the data The findings of the study showed significant statistical difference of gross motor performances between preterm and term infants in all test positions of supine, prone, sitting and standing subscales, with greatest motor deficits of preterm infants under prone position. The overall delays of these infants predispose them to delayed onset of achievement of more complex gross movements, such as walking, impeding social, educational and cognitive experience.
