The Inhibitory Effect of Swietenia Macrophylla (Mahogany) Leaves Solution on the Growth of Mosquito Larvae
One of the deadliest vectors considered in the world was the mosquitoes. It can lead to diseases that are fatal to humans such as Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Lymphatic filariasis and Zika Virus which produces an increase in mortality rate. Among these diseases, dengue is still the most serious cause of vector-borne disease in the Philippines. The study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of Swietenia macrophylla (Mahogany) leaves the solution on the growth of mosquito larvae within 24 hours. The preparation of Swietenia macrophylla (Mahogany) leaves were macerated using methanol as solvent, evaporated to dryness and formulated into a liquid solution. The mosquito larvae were obtained from their natural breeding sites such as canals and divided equally into seven (7) batches of 10 in 80ml stagnant water in three replicates. Each batch was treated with the different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%) of test solutions together with the Negative Control (Glycerin) and the Positive control (OL Pellets) and observed every 8 hours for 24-48 hours. The study revealed that the inhibition of the growth of mosquito larvae within 48 hours of observation in the 10% concentration was after 16 hours, which showed a 100% mortality of being treated with the liquid solution.
