Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli In Ethanol Extract From Mahogany (Swietenia mahogani) Seeds

The study evaluated the antibacterial activity of the ethanol mahogany (Swietenia mahogani) seeds extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It was conducted at the laboratory of Medical Laboratory Science department of Liceo de Cagayan University and the bacterial samples (nutrient broth) were taken from the Microbiology laboratory of Northern Mindanao Medical Center, Cagayan de Oro city. The ethanol mahogany seeds extract obtained was flesh in color and has a milky consistency.  After the removal of the extracting solvent, ethanol, through rotary evaporation, the liquid obtained was yellowish-brown and oily in consistency. The ethanol mahogany seeds extract exhibited no zone of inhibition in the medium containing Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The positive control, Nitrofurantoin, showed the highest range of inhibition followed by the blank control, ethanol. The zone of inhibition that was shown in each control substance used implied the bacteria’s susceptibility or resistance to it. Since the ethanol mahogany seeds extract did not exhibit zone of inhibition in both bacterial samples (S. aureus and E. coli), it does not possess antibacterial property that would inhibit the growth of the said microorganisms.
