In Vitro Assessment on the Anthelmintic Property of Mahogany Swietenia macrophylla (King) Crude Seed Extract Against Ascaris suum (Goeze)in Pigs

Ascaris suum (Goeze) also known as huge roundworm is a parasitic nematode that causes ascariasis in pigs. While roundworms in pigs and humans are today considered as two species, A. suum and A. lumbricoides, with different hosts, cross infection between humans and pigs is possible. This study sought to determine the anthelmintic property of Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) crude seed extract and compared it with Levamisole which served as the positive control. After distillation, the extract was obtained using ethanol. Two concentrations (75% and 100%) of the crude extract were made. These and the control were tested separately on three replicates of the test organism, Ascaris suum. The concentrations of Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) crude seed extract, showed anthelmintic property against Ascaris suum.  Results revealed that all tests proved to cause total loss of motility on the test organism implying that the crude extract has an anthelmintic property. On the test of significant difference which was calculated by the time it took the organisms above to lose their mortality, the positive control had the shorter time than that of the test specimen. Thus, the mahogany crude seed extract is less potent than Levamisole. However, based on the conducted study the crude extract exhibited potency and therefore can be used as an alternative for commercially available anthelmintic drugs.
