Mental Well-Being as a Determinant of Online Classroom Engagement among Communication Students

Jan Andrei S. Eyana

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all higher education institutions have adopted the online teaching-learning modality. The sudden change of modality has caused anxiety to both teachers and students as they adjusted to the change. Hence, this descriptive-correlational study on mental well-being and learning engagement of students in the online learning context is timely and relevant. The study involved all Communication students enrolled in Liceo de Cagayan University during the Academic Year 2021-2022. Survey questionnaires were used for the gathering of data, which were then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings of the study reveal that the students had moderate level of mental well-being and high engagement in online classes. Moreover, the study found a significant positive relationship between the students’ mental well-being and behavioral engagement in online classes. Therefore, the College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with the Guidance Office should take initiatives that boost students’ mental well-being so as to further increase students’ behavioral engagement in online classes.
